Colic in Infants
[dropcap1]C[/dropcap1]olic symptoms generally tend to start as early as 2 or 3 weeks old week. The stages of progression can last several months and peak in the 2 to 3 month range. In most cases it will begin to subside and completely disappear between the age of 4 or 5 months. During those months the stress can become great, for the child and the family. Sometimes it is necessary to relieve the pressure being built up, especially in extreme cases that last several months. A child experiencing colic can have bodily contractions, which is called hypertonic. In a spastic manner the child can sporadically change between extending their body and contracting into a ball. The child usually places itself in an unapproachable and inconsolable episode while the symptoms are visible. Much of the stress is expressed through piercing cries.
It is natural for a mother to try and console their upset child. Common methods to treat a colicky baby are swaddling, distraction, rocking and moving gently. A therapy that is not often though first of is Chiropractic care of colic. There have been many studies on the efficacy of chiropractic care and have provided promising results. Many healthcare and parenting forums also show the positive results from individual cases.
How does a spine relate to colic?
The birthing process is very stressful especially on the body of a developing child. Spinal misalignment can happen during birth without your knowledge or intent. In the case a spinal misalignment does occur this can make a child much more prone to disease. Simply put the Nervous System needs the spine to function properly and when is it not in full motion your body can react negatively. Even after the birthing process spinal problems can stem from improper handling or diaper changing methods. Many standard medical procedures such as a C-section or the use of tools to aid the babies removal can also put the child in a higher percentage of having a spinal misalignment. A pediatric chiropractor for colic would determine is an adjustment was necessary to return the back back to a fully functioning state. Overall the approach and process of restoring a nervous system will have positive effects on other areas of the infant life. The result of proper communication in the nerves is a happier and healthier baby.
Pediatric Chiropractor for Colic Research
The international chiropractic pediatric association has extensive research on the chiropractic care of children with colic. Some of those results are referenced below.
A December 2008 statistical analysis found that the most common alternative medicine used by adults AND children was chiropractic spinal manipulations. In the world of chiropractors and their satisfied patients this came at no surprise. These findings are not surprising to most chiropractors and their patients. A chiropractor can treat anything from asthma, ear infections, autism, and of course colic. Mistakenly labeled a simple “childhood condition”, colic is stressful to both parents and healthcare providers alike. The relationship between a child and parent during colic conditions are always under pressure. Additionally, blind studies found that colicky infants may be at greater risk of child abuse and Shaken Baby Syndrome.
The shortcomings of pharmaceutical treatment of colic, and negative effects from them, only cause more parents and their infants to turn to pediatric chiropractic care for colic. Pharmaceuticals like simethicone, dicyclomine, and methylscopolamine have been found in randomized controlled clinical trials to be either ineffective or unsafe for use in infants with colic. Instead of treating the colic many cases found the infant experience drowsiness, even seizures and coma.
Two separate uncontrolled blind studies found that over 90% of the infants treated with chiropractic care experienced an improvement in health. Separately from the infants improvement over 94% of parents felt an improvement in the stress and role they played. These improvements were seen with over 2 to 3 adjustment in as little as one week.
Dr. Jamieson is the head chiropractor at Ageonics Medical and takes pride in improvement not only the lives of infants but the families that are feeling stress as well. Because, he was once in the same position and is a living example at the application of chiropractic care to colic.
